I don't know if Jim Playfair grew up as a fan of Hulk Hogan and the WWF but he certainly gave that impression on Saturday night.
Playfair, the Coach of the Abbotsford Heat of the American Hockey League lost control when one of his players was kicked out of the game against the Hamilton Bulldogs by Referee Jamie Koharski for charging the opposing team's goaltender.
Playfair was given a 10-minute game misconduct, kicked out of the game and fined an undisclosed amount by the AHL.
Koharski is the son of retired NHL official Don Koharski, who was involved in one of the NHL's most infamous tirades. In 1988, Devils coach Jim Schoenfeld called Koharski a "fat pig" and told him to "have another doughnut."

Classic Tunes That Should Never Be Covered
I love music. Well, I love most music. I'm not a big country fan but every now and then one or two will slip through and make it on to my iPod.
As a music lover there's one thing I absolutely hate and that's when new artists are so talentless that they can't write their own music and have to record another singers music from the past. Now if that original song sucked to begin with, then I don't mind so much. However, when some musical "genius" takes a classic song by a legendary artists that has no business being covered, that really irks me to no end.
There are too many songs to mention here that I feel should either never be covered or if they have already been destroyed, they should never be covered again.
The one song that I instantly think of that never should have been touched by anyone is "(Sittin' On The Dock) of The Bay" by Ottis Redding. Here's a song that is not only a classic but was recorded by a legend who died shortly after. Sadly it was later recorded by several artists including Glen Campbell, Percy Sledge and Willie Nelson, but when Michael Bolton recorded his brutal version that just about killed me. Even to this day when I listen to it I want to rip off my ears.
Another that comes to mind is one that my older readers might not know much about but for anyone who grew up in the 70's and 80's The Ramones were the leaders of the Punk movement and their song "Blitzkrieg Bop" was both influential and fun to dance to. It sickens me to see other groups taint the legendary status of this song but the version by Rob Zombie is just awful.
"(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" recorded by the Rolling Stones in 1965 is probably their most well known song and in the realm of rock classics, they don't come much better. Yet in 1977 the American New Wave band Devo did their best to kill this song.
The whole reason I thought this would be a good topic is because I heard one of my all-time favourite rock songs of the 70's was remade yet again and I believe it is one song that nobody should be allowed to touch. The song is "Stairway To Heaven" by Led Zeppelin. The sad part is that this song is probably one of the most covered tunes in history with at least 100 different interpretations but none compare or ever will compare to the original. The latest version, while being sung by a great female vocalist, still makes me want to cry...and not tears of joy. Mary J. Blige, while giving it her own variations, remained somewhat true to the original. However, I doubt she's ever seen a hedgerow in her life.
Like I said, there are so many classic songs that in my mind should never ever be recorded by anyone other than the original artists and I don't have the room here to mention them all since I've barely scratched the surface.
I think what really makes me shake my head in disbelief is how kids today hear the remake of a great song and they have no clue that another group or artist recorded it first. A prime example of that would be the song "Africa" by Toto which was recorded in 1982. It was recently redone with a modern twist by Karl Wolf. So sad.

News Oddities For March
It's time once again for more news of the weird and wacky with a few comments by me thrown in for good measure.
A 25-year-old Florida man has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for violating his probation by trying to break into the Brevard County jail. Authorities say he tried to climb a 12-foot fence at the Brevard County Detention Center. He was caught and hospitalized with severe cuts from the barbed wire. He had been released a week earlier after accepting a plea deal on a manslaughter charge.
**Is the food really that good in Florida prisons? Either that or he missed some of that sweet sweet inmate lovin'.**
Two golfers at a San Diego area country club sank a most unlikely pair of aces. Charles T. White nailed a hole-in-one on the ninth hole at Bernardo Heights Country Club. Next up in the foursome was Kitty Tinker, who matched it. A spokesman for the club confirmed the consecutive aces. A 2000 Golf Digest study calculated the odds of two golfers in the same foursome acing the same hole at 17 million to one.
**Even Tiger Woods has never seen that happen although that hasn't stopped him from trying to sink more than one in the same night before.**
A college student proposed to his girlfriend on a New Jersey Transit bus at New York's Port Authority Bus Terminal. Leora Feigenbaum was on her way home from Manhattan when a Port Authority employee escorted the 20-year-old from the back of the line to the bus. On board, she found flowers, decorations and boyfriend Adam Frohlinger holding an engagement ring. Frohlinger, who is 21, says he picked the bus because he knew it was the last place his girlfriend would expect a proposal.
**Really, do ya think so? I'm sure all girls dream of being proposed to on a bus with the sweet smell of urine hanging in the air and the dazzling array of day old newspapers and garbage lining the floor.**

Now This Is Hockey!
I haven't had a lot of free time lately to devote to my blog. Work has been steady and my weekends have been spent doing other things besides sitting in front of the computer. I miss my computer.
In fact, the last two days I actually spent some time watching TV, but not just any TV. I was watching some of the Sledge Hockey action and the 2010 Paralympic Winter Games in Vancouver. What a wild sport with some amazing athletes. The strength these guys have to compete is incredible.
Of course, Canada won their first two games but for those of you who have never seen a game before and don't have a clue what it's about, have a look at the videos below.
This first video is a compilation of action during the last Winter Games in Torino, Italy where Canada won the Gold Medal.
The second video is much shorter and shows you just how intense the action can be and how much these men are determined to win...even if it means they have to fight. This was a game between Canada and the United States.
